FOR STUDENTS: VISITING THE GUIDANCE OFFICE DURING THE DAY
Guidance counselors are available to counsel individual students and groups of students. Students are encouraged to make an appointment with a counselor to help them resolve issues with their day-to-day school experiences and disagreements or problems with other persons. Conferences with parents also can be arranged to increase the home-school communication which leads to increased student success.
FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS:
When a student is unable to attend school, parents should telephone the school (896-8805) as soon as possible to report the student’s name and the reason for absence. Upon the student’s return to school, parents are to write a note to be given to the school secretary. Failure to provide a note, even for an excused absence communicated over the phone from the parent or guardian, within 3 days of an absence will result in the absence being coded as “unexcused.”
IF YOU ARE LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY
For students who have permission to leave school early, he or she is to bring a parent note to one of the school secretaries in the main office, before school begins. Parents need to come into the main office to sign a student out, before he or she can leave.
IF YOU ARE ARRIVING TO SCHOOL LATE
Any student tardy to school must report to the office with their parent or with a written note signed by a parent or guardian explaining the reason for being late to school. If a note at the time is not possible, the tardy will be coded as unexcused. However, if the note is presented to the office the following day the tardy will be changed to “excused” in the school’s database if the explanation is the note falls within the definition of an excused absence. Accumulation of unexcused tardies to school will be handled according to regulations issued by the RCPS School Board.
IF YOU HAVE EXCESSIVE ABSENCES
Upon a student’s 5th unexcused absence or their 15th absence to school for any reason (excluding school sponsored events), the student’s administrator will contact the parent by phone and letter to request a meeting to develop an Attendance Improvement Plan.

Here at JFHMS we encourage our students to develop personal goals for themselves by exploring individual strengths, goals and personalities. Having self-awareness of all of these characteristics is vital to career selection int he future as well. We provide a program called Naviance to help students narrow their career search and help them to create a plan to reach their academic and career goals. All 6th graders will work through inventories to get them thinking about their future while all 7th and 8th grade students will develop an Academic Plan that will outline which diploma they plan to work towards as well as the classes they plan to take through high school.
Naviance is a thorough and comprehensive college/career readiness program that helps align student strengths and interests to post-secondary goals. Your student can login to Naviance using their Powerschool username and password, by clicking the following link: Naviance - J. Frank Hillyard
